Our Approach

We approach our work as a continuous praxis of learning and doing, reflection and action, that inform and inspire each other. All done in community. Community is the special sauce that keeps us coming back and holds us in loving accountability.

  • Rushing to action without reflection often leads to misplaced energy and unintentional harm.
  • Failing to translate learning into action is an abdication of responsibility.
  • We strive to be in a community of mutual support and accountability to balance these interdependent objectives.

We learn together

"You cannot dismantle what you cannot see. You cannot challenge what you don’t understand.”  ‍‍

- Layla Saad

We prioritize learning because as White men we don’t know what we don’t know about race and racism.

We believe transforming ourselves is necessary to transform the world around us.

We take action together.

Our Approach to Action

Skillful action is informed by our learning, and especially our listening to Black, Indigenous, and other People of Color who see things we do not and have been leading this work for generations.

WMRJ is answering twin calls to action: 1) to ‘go get your people’ – inviting other White men to the work for equity and justice – 2) to ‘get off the porch’ – supporting and organizing White men to take action across our spheres of influence.

We use both our human capital (i.e. our time, skills, relationships) and our financial capital (i.e. our money and ability to access money) and we ask ourselves two questions:

What are you doing, and how can WMRJ best support you?
What is WMRJ doing, and do you want to participate?

Check out some of the things men in our community are doing to translate their learning into action.

We build community together

We gather virtually every Tuesday from 8:00-9:30 ET, beginning with the following Invitation to Brave Space by Beth Strano and Micky ScottBey Jones.

Together we will create brave space because
There is no such thing as a “safe space” —
We exist in the real world.
We all carry scars and have caused wounds.
This space
seeks to turn down the volume of the world outside,
and amplify voices that have to fight to be heard elsewhere.
We call each other to more truth and love.
We have the right to start somewhere and continue to grow.
We have the responsibility to examine what we think we know.
This space will not be perfect.
It will not always be what we wish it to be
But
It will be our space together,
and we will work on it side by side."
